Florence
Find a thoughtful first route through Florence, connecting the Duomo, civic squares and Arno with time for art, a proper meal and the streets of the Oltrarno.
Find your starting point in Italy, from Rome's ancient monuments to regional landscapes, with an approach that leaves room to explore each place properly.
Italy offers several very different journeys within one country. Its regions include Alpine landscapes, Apennine towns, Mediterranean coasts and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Historic cities belong to that wider geography: the setting of a place can matter as much as the monument that first drew you there. Begin by deciding what you want time for, rather than how many famous names you can fit into a route.
Rome is a useful starting point for a trip focused on history. The Italian capital is in Lazio, where the city sits within a region of coastline, hills and mountain landscapes. In Rome itself, the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine introduce different parts of ancient urban life. Later churches, palaces and piazzas add further chapters. Following those connections gives a visit more shape than treating every landmark as an isolated stop.
Think of a country itinerary as a series of bases, each with enough space around it. Before adding another destination, compare the actual journey between your accommodation and the next stop, including station transfers, check-in arrangements and luggage. Keep the first and last parts of a travel day lighter. This is an approach to planning, rather than a promise that every route is quick or every connection runs daily. Check the relevant transport operator for the dates you intend to travel.
Food provides another way to pay attention to regional differences. In Rome, menus may introduce dishes such as gricia, carbonara and amatriciana. Read the menu itself, ask about ingredients when necessary and choose a meal that fits your day. A restaurant's location beside a monument does not establish its quality, current opening hours or table availability. Our nearby dining guides are starting points for further checking, rather than a guarantee of a reservation.
Use this collection to move from the country to a city and then to a particular place. The Rome guide explains how to organize a first visit; the Colosseum guide looks more closely at the building and its access arrangements. Keep the larger trip flexible enough for that closer attention. Ticket conditions, opening times and transport services should always be checked for your own visit date.
